Sitting in the back of his boring history class at Canterlot High, he listened to his MP3 player with the coolest headphones. No, they weren't “Beats," nor anything you could get in stores. He made them himself. The little DJ boy that nobody really knew. He was quite the shy one. He glanced up at the window to see thousands upon thousands of red, yellow and orange leaves. They seemed to fall in a sort of rhythm, much like his beloved dubstep, or “Wubs" as he called it. Even though his attention was focused on the leaves, he was still aware of the girl who thought him to be quite interesting.
Octavia. “Tavi” for short. Tavi stared at the DJ with inquisitive interest, through she usually paid attention in class. The DJ, who went by the name of Vinyl, never seemed to notice, as he was always tinkering with something. This time it was a watch. It seemed as if he was trying to reverse engineer it to shoot out some specific noise every hour. But Tavi didn't know this. She was intelligent, sure, but she was no computer scientist. Vinyl was chewing on his lip quite thoughtfully when suddenly, he made a strange face at Tavi. It was very unexpected, as Octavia wasn't aware that Vinyl even knew she existed. Octavia was so startled, she fell backwards off her chair. Vinyl started laughing so much, he had to pause for breath. He just cracked up. No other words for it. He must have laughed for about five full minutes. Octavia hastily arose from the ground, rubbing her head a bit.
"Uuuuuuuggg...." moaned Tavi.
"Hey, you can stop laughing now, okay?!"
"....P... PHHH!! I can't help it! The look on your face!!"
".....Please..." Octavia glowered at Vinyl, the kind of look that would make someone feel unusually penitent.
".....Sorry... But it was still funny."
The bell rang, to Tavi’s relief. She grabbed her books and quickly scurried to the door. However, Vinyl caught up with her and started walking with her.
“So, I’ve noticed you’ve been eyeing me, Miss.... Mrs... Er...”
“Octavia. Tavi shall suffice,” the classical music enthusiast replied with a smile.
“Ah. Tavi it is! Anyway, I see you’ve taken an interest in my inventing?” the dubstep-lover questioned. They seemed not to even notice all the people passing them as they left campus on their way home.
“It... does seem quite interesting. What is it all about?”
“Well, I’ll tell ya! This is great, finally having someone to talk to!” Vinyl said, enthusiastically. He’d been alone for so long that he feared that he would never find that “special someone.”
Octavia nodded her head slightly as they strolled across Canterlot City. They took in the beautiful sights of autumn leaves and the window displays in the shops on every street.
“Hey, Tavi, I’ll tell you at Sugarcube Corner. Milkshakes, my treat!”
“Um...” Tavi looked into Vinyl’s eyes, which looked exceptionally wet, as if he were trying to guilt trip her. Well, if he was, it worked!
“Sure. Just let me get dressed for the occasion,” Octavia said.
“Alright! It’s a date!”
“...In which...” Vinyl was at a loss for words, lost in Tavi’s eyes, which seemed as if they were staring down into his soul. “I-I meant that in a non-romantic way!!!”
Octavia said goodbye to Vinyl, for the moment, as she scurried home and found some decent clothing. Looking in the mirror, she regarded her looks, humbly. Her skin was a nice grey color. Her hair was a deep jet black with a thin line of white running through it. She had a pink bowtie wrapped snug around her neck. Tavi placed the familiar metal loop of her favorite earrings through her ear . They had a purple treble clef on them. She had a dress resembling a bunch of octaves, a couple of notes placed on them. She looked elegant. Quite sophisticated. Octavia knew that Vinyl wasn’t one for fancy things, but she didn’t care. This is how she dressed for every occasion. She prepared herself to leave, putting on high-heels and grabbing her purse, not surprisingly shaped like a cello. It sat next to her real cello. She was ready. Vinyl, on the other hand, was going with the “Chillin’” look...
Vinyl, at his home, gazed into the mirror. His blue-in-two-shades hair looked beautiful in the sunset lighting outside. He thought it looked great with his pale skin. He walked over to his closet, the one with a rotation dial, and frantically twisted the knob.
The DJ stopped turning it at the shorts section. He grabbed his sky blue shorts and quickly hopped into them. He had his music note necklace and a pair of glasses resting on his nose. Black edges framed the brilliant purple lenses. He had on a white tank-top, with a small blue jacket over it. Eeyup. Just chillin’. Vinyl had invented a lot of gizmos, and one of them was a teleportation device. He set the coordinates to the restaurant, Sugarcube Corner, and transported himself to the front door. Surprised, a certain somebody who was already there jumped backwards in shock.
Octavia just lay on the ground, nearly perfectly mimicking the face Vinyl made earlier.
“Uuh... You okay, Octi?” The DJ asked, staring at his new-found friend.
“Y-you just... appeared! How is that...?” she stammered.
“Science. Here, I’ll explain that, too,” he said, reaching out a hand to help Octavia up.
“Th-thanks...” She followed Vinyl into the restaurant after gingerly taking the hand-up.
They sat down at the counter, sipping gingerly from their hot Doritos milkshakes, Vinyl’s idea. The DJ explained some of his inventions, such as the transporter. Suddenly, the intense flavors of the shake, and the fact she just plain wasn’t used to spiciness, made Tavi shout in pain.“Aaah!! This is SPICY!!!!”
“Yeah, I know! That’s what makes them so good!” Vinyl said with a grin.
Octavia literally breathed fire. No wonder they were called “Doritos Five-Flare-You-Can’t-Sue-Me’s!” The classical music lover passed out, her face sweating and her nose steaming.
“...Tavi? You okay?” Vinyl asked.
No response. She was out cold. The DJ propped her up on his shoulder, carrying her home. Vinyl didn’t know where Tavi resided, however, so he took Tavi to his own house. He was exhausted. Who knew such a slim person as Octavia could be so HEAVY?!
Vinyl plopped down on the couch where Tavi slept. Bandages were wrapped around the cellist’s tongue. Wow, no wonder the shake said they couldn’t sue.
She bled for a little bit, too. Good thing the DJ knew medical procedures for severe “tongue-go-boom-boom-itis.” Vinyl sat patiently on the couch, waiting for his friend to awaken, but Tavi was out cold. The popular TV show Epic Wub Time came on. The show was loved by many musicians, mostly Vinyl.
Tavi was still unconscious so Vinyl went to his room for a minute to fetch his MP3 player. Walking back to the living room, he didn’t see his cat crossing in front of him. He began to trip over her, lost his balance and hit his head on the edge of the coffee table. The impact of his head against the hard wood was accompanied by a sickening crack of bone. Fractured skull. Vinyl lay on the floor, some blood trickling from a part of his head that the bone actually pierced. He would be dead in a matter of minutes if someone didn’t save him...
Octavia arose with a yawn, painfully aware of the bandages on her tongue. She peeled them off and quickly remembered what happened. Vinyl! She had to thank him! But where was he- OH, GOD! A body was on the floor, resembling someone familiar.
“Vinyl!! How did this happen?!” Tavi asked the figure on the floor. Which, of course, said nothing.
“I gotta get you to the hospital!!!” Octavia screeched.
“How am I gonna do that, it’s three miles away?! Oh! That transporter thing! Umm...” she dragged Vinyl carefully over to the giant contraption labeled “Transportalizer.” The coordinates were still set to the restaurant, and she had no idea how to tell the hospital’s coordinates. Still a mile away from Sugarcube Corner, the hospital was closer to it than Vinyl’s house. She propped Vinyl on her shoulder and hit the button that said “Transport.”
The mile run was difficult. A slightly plump being on her back, Octavia ran the whole way. The blood flowed more quickly after a couple minutes, so Tavi ripped a small piece of her ankle-long dress off after hesitating. A life was more important than her adorable clothing, at least usually. Wow, that made it easier to run! The clothing piece was wrapped crudely around the DJ’s head, soaking up some blood like a sponge. The hospital was in view. Only a quarter mile away! Tavi ran as fast as she could, faster than she was already. Finally, after what seemed like hours, she had finished the mile. She opened the giant glass doors of the medical facility and slowed to a stop in front of the reception counter.
“N-nurse... Please... Help Vinyl...” she panted in between breaths. She fell forwards and blacked out with the dying DJ on top of her.
“Miss, wake up,” the nurse stated. Harsh sunlight shone in through the windows and through the sleeping Octavia’s eyelids. “Miss... Ah, there you are.”
“Wh-what... Where am I?” the disoriented Tavi asked.
“Canterlot Hospital. You ran a long distance with your friend on your back. You’re alright, just exhausted,” the nurse replied
Octavia remembered Vinyl and quickly began to worry.
“Vinyl! I-Is he alright?!”
“......He... he has a fractured skull and a concussion... He hasn’t woken up yet... See for yourself...” The nurse stepped to the side and a hospital bed could be seen. A familiar DJ sat in there, many machines attached to him.
Octavia just stared, open mouthed at her new friend.
“Er... We’ll give you a moment alone...” The nurse and a doctor, whom Octavia hadn’t noticed previously, left the room.
Tavi got up and walked to the bed where her friend lay.
“V-Vinyl....” She drooped her head and started to silently weep. She cried and cried, all her tears falling onto Vinyl’s chest. The slow beeping of the heart monitor was all that showed that he was still alive.
A ghost fluttered above the scene. The ghost belonged to the injured DJ. He looked just as he had the first day, with his reverse-engineered watch and headphones. Vinyl’s life hung by a string above Octavia, from where he could hear everything.
“I... I know we just met recently but... Somehow you’re more than just a friend already.... Why did it have to end like this....?!” Tavi then suddenly hugged Vinyl around the neck as a long beep that had no end from the heart monitor was heard. More cries from Tavi reverberated around the room as she embraced the corpse . The ghost smiled and adjusted its glasses. It floated into a skydive towards its body. The monitor turned off but deep inside the cadaver’s chest, his heart beat. Once. Then twice. He had been revived by Octavia’s warm embrace. Somewhere he found the strength to speak.
“T-Tavi... You saved me...”
“GASP! Y-You’re... alive!!!” Tavi’s eyes widened as she quit glomping Vinyl.
“Yeah... You are responsible...”
“But I didn’t do anything...!” Octavia argued.
“It wasn’t what you did... It’s what you felt...”
“What I felt... Wha-” She was interrupted by the sudden warm feel of Vinyl’s lips against hers. She was shocked at first, but soon enough joined in on the kiss
Vinyl was overwhelmed by the happiness of knowing he had finally found someone “special" that loved him back. The feeling of love and best friends forever set in. It seemed a little tune was going on in their heads, perfectly in synch with each other. Classical and dubstep notes wove together. The Wubs of Love.
